Biography:

* I'm a weblog coach, helping business, non-profit, government and civic leaders learn the art of strategic blogging. I'm working on two books related to this: Small Business Blogging and Leadership Blogging.

* I work with organizations interested in developing citizen journalism projects, similar to the civic blogosphere project at Northfield.org where I'm project leader/volunteer.

* I set up and moderate time-limited web forums/online events, primarily for govenment and non-profit organizations.

I've pretty much made my living online since 1986, primarily as an online community builder, having founded and managed three successful online communities: MIX, the McGraw-Hill Information Exchange for Teachers and Schools (1986-90); Utne Reader magazine's Café Utne (1995-97); and Northfield.org's Web Café (1995-current). Café Utne received the coveted Webby Award for community in May, 2000.

I've kept a weblog called Real Joe since the fall of 2000. Other recent positions include HR and organizational development guy for gofast.net, a St. Paul, MN-based ISP; and New Media Manager for Utne Reader magazine.

My first career spanned 15 years as a family therapist and school social worker (1971-86). I graduated from the University of St. Thomas with a BA in Philosophy and received my Masters in Human Development from St. Mary's University.
